20 Credits AUTUMN

Aims/Description: How do we use language to shape our gender identities? In this module, we consider how the way that we talk is ideologically associated with both gender conforming and non-conforming identities. We explore language in all its forms: as speech, text and social action. We draw upon a range of data-types, such that you will become a competent interpreter of quantitative data patterns and be able to use discourse analysis to carefully dissect the hidden messages about gender that reside in language. Our approach is inclusive and empowering, as we consider our role as researchers in promoting gender equality through language policy and practice.
