Aims/Description: This unit provides training in essential personal effectiveness skills to enable students to carry out their PhD research projects as well as to gain an insight into the skills required to work successfully in industry. Training will cover skills such as networking, communication and presentation, motivation, assertiveness, project and time management and creative thinking. Students will be encouraged to take a reflective approach to their learning and will be encouraged to identify their own additional training needs. The unit will be followed up by additional training in years two to four of the CDT programme and is supported by a requirement to complete a Personal and Professional Development (PDP) log to relate training to PhD learning and experience.
