It is intended to provide research training, and involves the completion of a comprehensive literature survey including the reading of original papers and review articles in Learned Society journals and conference proceedings. Each project will usually also involve laboratory work although some may be based primarily on computational studies or a detailed examination of the published literature. It provides an opportunity for students to pursue their own subject-related interests The project is over the academic year and the student will be embedded in one of the world class research groups within materials to work alongside PhD students and post doctoral research assistants.
