Aims/Description: This module focuses on the relationship between the chemical structure, molecular organisation, microstructure and physical properties of polymers in the solid state. The parallels between synthetic polymers and biopolymers and the different methods of microstructural investigation will be discussed. The theory of the optical properties of solid polymers and the applications of these properties will also be covered, with particular reference to liquid crystals.
