Aims/Description: Phase diagrams provide fundamental information on the composition(s) of phases, their thermodynamic stability, including meeting behaviour and whether or not they are stable in contact with other phases. They underpin the methods used to synthesise and process metals, ceramics and glasses, including microstructural control, precipitation hardening, crystal growth and glass formation. The module provides an introduction to binary (2-component) phase diagrams with main focus on the use and interpretation of phase diagrams rather then methods for their construction. A wide range of examples are discussed including their relevance to cement manufacture, steel making, purification and growth of semiconductor crystals.
