Aims/Description: The Doctoral Training in Management module introduces doctoral candidates to the principles underpinning research in the management discipline. Learners will reflect on the role of social theory as the foundation of their research approach, they will refine their critical thinking skills and learn to be mindful, systematic and rigorous in engaging with the management literature. In addition to the core conceptual and methodological skills necessary for conducting rigorous academic research in management, participants will learn to identify opportunities and pathways for their research to make a positive impact on organisations and societies and explore creative and wide-reaching routes for research dissemination. Learners will have the opportunity to present their work to expert audiences, receive critical analysis of their work, and practice defending it with rigour but adjusting its interpretation or analysis where required. They will identify and develop professional, conceptual and research skills, that are transferable to academic, industry and policy-making contexts. With input from experienced and expert scholars, learners will explore the academic publication landscape and gain an appreciation of the varied and inclusive research dissemination routes available in the management discipline. Learners will be supported to consider the implications and impact of their own and broader management research on working lives, organisations and societies worldwide, and appreciate how their research may help foster socially responsible and sustainable management practices.
